Thank you for your interest in volunteering!
Friends of Mexico is a charitable organization run solely by volunteers. Our board or directors, members, and other volunteers may be from three different countries, but we have the same goals. It is always difficult to recruit volunteers, especially if most of them are retired and not looking for more work to do. That is why we tell everyone that we appreciate even an hour of their time. If we put a few of those hours together, we can achieve our goals! .
Our members are always invited
The following are some examples of how you can volunteer for Friends of Mexico while you are in Mazatlán, México. To represent Friends of Mexico at the schools, you must be a member.
Visit a primary school when they hold a special event. Our members are always invited and welcome to attend. It is our opportunity to meet the children who usually dress up for Day of the Dead and Mexican Revolution Day, for example.
Attend the scholarship payment appointments. Meet the students and parents, and help review their paperwork. Some knowledge of Spanish is a bonus. This happens August/September and again in February/March.
Meet the students and parents
Amigos de México Primary School is an all-day school so they serve lunch to all the children. About 25% of the children cannot afford the fee so we bring supplementary pantry items to their kitchen to make sure they have enough for everyone.
Join the English as a Second Language team. Once per week from November to March, a group of teachers travels to one or two primary schools to offer classes in English. There are teachers with experience, as well as those who come to assist, and they work together to help the children in the classroom. These lessons are very welcome and popular.
Our organization run solely by volunteers
Serve on the Board of Directors. There is occasionally a position open and the time and participation required varies greatly. For example, the Member Services Chair may organize a day trip to a popular site for a group of members and they get to go as the host!.
