Frequently Asked Questions
- Can we select our students?
The Scholarship Committee will select the next eligible student to receive a new scholarship. The student who has been in the program the longest has priority, but there is some flexibility in choice from new applicants.
- Can we meet or contact our student?
Yes. One way to meet your student is to attend the annual Reunion of sponsors and students which is held early in the year. Another way is to make arrangements with the student and family through the scholarship committee who will facilitate a meeting. With the parent’s or student’s permission, we can share their email address or phone number.
- Do I need to be a member of Friends of Mexico to sponsor a student?
No, you don’t need to be a member. We welcome anyone to be a sponsor who wants to help a student stay in school.
- Can I sponsor more than one student?
Certainly. Several sponsors support more than one student.
- Can we support a student after high school?
The primary purpose of the scholarship program is to support students in junior high and high school. At present, though, in 2021, we have enough sponsors to continue to support the students going on to university, and have been trying to see them through to the end of their studies.
- What are the application requirements?
The student must have an average grade of 8.5 (85%) or better and their family must have a financial need of assistance to pay for school expenses.
- How is the money administered?
A scholarship payment of $1500 pesos is delivered as soon as school starts in order to help with the cost of inscription fees and supplies. When students receive their grades mid year, in about February or March, they receive the other half of the scholarship by cheque or bank transfer. A record is kept of all payments for the accountant and Mexican tax department for review.
- How do I become a sponsor?
In the Scholarship window on this site, click on ‘sponsorship’ and submit your application and payment online. If you are in Mazatlan or have other questions, please contact us at info@friendsofmexicoac.org
- How much does it cost?
The scholarship for each student is $3000 pesos. The full amount must be paid prior to the end of June. Then we can plan how many students can be offered a scholarship for the upcoming school year.
- How does the student find out that they are sponsored?
New student applicants will be contacted by phone or Whatsapp by the scholarship committee, told who their sponsor is, given instructions about what the guidelines are and where to meet for their payment.
