Amigos de México Mzt. A.C.
Committees
We appreciate your help
Our committees consist solely of volunteers whom we appreciate very much. If you are interested in offering a little of your time to one of the following, please contact us or come to a member meeting.
01.
— School Support Committee
We are proud to support a few primary schools in the poor areas of the city. There are a few things we do to ensure that children stay in school. We have built a cafeteria and kitchen at the all-day school, Amigos de Mexico Primaria, and continue to help them with ongoing maintenance. We bring them supplementary pantry groceries because 25% of the children cannot afford the 13 pesos for their lunch. In 2019 we also offered some support to Renato Vega Amador Primaria. We have a very successful and popular English program. A group of members travel to the schools every week between November and March to teach English classes.
02.
— Scholarship Committee
When children graduate from primary school, the teacher can recommend them for a scholarship. Their average grade must be 85% or better, and the family must be financially needy. Our scholarship of $3000 pesos per year pays for fees and books, so it is instrumental in encouraging families to keep their children in school. In the 2020 to 2021 school year, in spite of the fact that schools were closed due to the pandemic, we had 56 children in the program! The committee keeps the children’s records and organizes two payment dates per year.
03.
— Fundraising Committee
We hold a fundraising event annually to raise funds to support both the school support and scholarship programs. In March 2019 our Fundraising Chair, Peter Jordan, held a social at his home where he and his wife played guitar and sang. In February 2020, Friends Diner and the Beach Seekers band hosted a musical afternoon where we raised $33000 pesos!
04.
— Membership Committee
This committee has the responsibility of enrolling new members and obtaining their contact information. Current members can renew on this website, or in person at a members meeting. There is also a membership table available at Rico’s Café in the golden zone on Fridays from 10 am to noon between November 12th, and February 11th.
05.
— Member Services Committee
In our mission statement, we state that we wish to ‘enhance the experience of our members living in Mazatlan.’ This has been done in various ways over the past twenty years, including offering group excursions, both day and overnight, and classes such as art and Spanish. Also, every month during the winter season, a group of members experiments with a different restaurant. Because we currently do not have a member services chair, we rely on members to suggest and organize the events that interest them.
06.
— Newsletter Committee
A paper newsletter is printed for those members who attend the member meetings. They contain the news of our activities, events at the schools, and administrative updates. Since they are so popular, we would like to send them to all members via email in the future.
07.
— Website Committee
The website has multiple functions besides providing information and updates about our organisation. We also use it to maintain our database of member information which is private and only accessible by administration. We are starting to build our database of Mazatlan vendors, services, and restaurants which offer discounts to our members. This list will be available to members who log onto the site.
We Would Love to Hear from You
